Canadian Confederation HQ
On the First of July in the year 1867, the British colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were united together as the Dominion of Canada by the proclamation of the British North America Act.
Today, Canadians enjoy life in a country renowned for its geographic beauty, its cultural diversity, and its global presence as peace keepers, activists, writers, artists, and innovators.
None of this would be possible without the efforts of certain determined individuals who stood at a crossroads in history and negotiated the waters of political divides and language barriers in order to confederate as a nation.
Canadian Confederation has been a long process that began in 1864 and has continued to the creation of the Nunavut Territory in 1999. The resources on this website have been collected to help students and teachers of Canadian history to research and study:
- WHO was responsible for the birth of this country;
- WHERE the important discussions and conferences took place and;
- WHY the topic of Canadian Confederation was controversial at the time and continues to spark debate today
Regarding the included websites: I have tried my best not to duplicate the links I have provided (ie. linking to different pages on the same site). Many of the webpages I have included are part of larger databases with additional information on various aspects of Canadian confederation so be sure to explore their links as well!
